As a practising family dentist, I am also concerned with the orofacial growth and potential changes in my newborn's primary palate and maxillofacial structures, both which are greatly affected by function. We acquired quite a number of Medela's Calma Teats based upon their claim that these engineered teats reproduce "natural feeding behaviour". We wanted to reproduce normal function in order to stimulate normal growth. Instead, however we have a product that does not deliver the milk consistently but rather causes our son to gulp down rather large boluses of air. This results in a very upset, gassy and "teased" baby. This is a poorly designed, overly engineered product which should not have been released to the market. The product claims are false. If you have been using another nipple your baby will NOT want to use it. We breast feed when together and bottle feed while apart(daycare). Some of the very positive reviews here are obviously from parents of babies who took well to the Calma nipple. Mine did not, and I felt that the company misrepresents the product. I purchased this, to be clear, for the use during a single nighttime relief feeding. Yes, the baby has to create his/her own suction for any milk to flow, but when it flows, it flows WAY too fast. This is problematic because, unlike on the breast, milk flows so quickly out of the Calma nipple that my baby's mouth fills up and overflows within a gulp or two. I purchased this at the recommendation of a friend, and I liked the idea that it would allow a more "natural" experience because my son would pace his own feeding. But the excessive flow prohibits that. Until now, I had been using basic Evenflo glass bottles with their standard slow flow nipples. These work much better than any fancier device I've found.
