I tried it myself as well, and unless you really press your nose into the plate in the center of the cup, the flow is very minimal. Not only that, but I think it actually hinders the transition to a normal cup, because one of the biggest hurdles is knowing how far back to tip the cup. With this cup, you can tip it upside down, but unless you press the plate, nothing is coming out. Also, like other avent sippies, the valve is multiple pieces that should really be taken apart at each use and washed unless you want mold growing in there - even with just water. They say not to use this cup with juice either, and I think milk would really get in the nooks and crannies as well. So at least its leakproof then, right? Sort of. It's true that it doesn't leak if the plate isn't pressed, but it doesn't take much to press the... As spillproof as the next cup, but since it doesn't require unnatural amounts of suction like most sippy cups, the child isn't at risk of developing tounge thrust and all of the issues associated with it.The #1 must have cup for children with a cleft, pre or post repair. Requires no suction and yet has a somewhat limited flow. Great for those needing to be off bottle before surgery and those after who haven't yet learned to suck. The best part of all is it's sold at most stores and doesn't require remortgaging your house to buy more than one! We tried traditional sippy cups and those with straws - to no avail. Our baby enjoyed drinking from this cup the first time. No special skills required, just tilt cup up, head back, and water comes through. Yes, it leaks a little, but for our child who couldn't use the other cups yet, this is a great compromise.For nursing moms who have babies struggling to nurse and have to supplement, this might be an option to finger feeding with a tube and syringe, spoon feeding, or using an SNS. This would alleviate the concern about nipple confusion for babies breastfeeding but also needing supplements (bottles take a different type of feeding skill than nursing nursing and can cause confusion for babies, sometimes resulting in the baby preferring bottle and no longer nursing).
